Mr. D. is a GENIUS!

After my 4 post yesterday- you are probably sick of reading my blog.... BUT, on the off chance you are not... ENJOY!!

Mr. D. and I were off together today. It was so nice. We had a leisurely morning and ran errands this afternoon. On a whim Mr. D. pulled into the most amazing place I have ever been. It was called Consigning Interiors. (do you angels singing --- ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!)
Now I am a girl who LOVES to plunder- and oh my at the plundering they had. Mr. D. did a fast walk through, showed me a few things he liked and then told me he was going to go get a haircut and would pick me back up later... or at least that is what I think happened as I was in my plundering daze. I saw a million things I just loved, not only things for me but things that I just know others would love too. I even told the shop keeper how amazing I thought this place was. Now, being on a tight budget, I had to make my choices wisely. I bought a little wooden bowl and grinder for my classroom. It is SO precious. Grinding is something we love to do year round. I also got a cool vase for my newly painted and undecorated bathroom. I am really into this geometric designs lately. Love it! All in all, we spent around 10 dollars and I could not be happier.

Thursday 13: (3rd for today) Thirteen things cluttering up my living room

Warning: This post contains large amounts of disorganization that my cause shock and dismay in some readers.

This is teacher work week- which means my house turns into mass chaos preparing things for the classroom to look fresh and new. EVERYTHING else has to take a back seat. In addition to teacher work week, I have devoted at least 2 hours every evening to painting- so things have been even more chaotic. I have seen 2 am more than once this week just trying to get it all done. There is nothing like printing and cutting cubby tags while watching infomercials in the middle of the night. So this afternoon when I came home, I decided not to paint but to clean. Here are 13 things that were cluttering up my living room.

1) Flowers and Sticks. I bought these last Friday. I got them out on Saturday to put in my door bucket- got distracted when the power went out and never came back to them.
2) Two bowls that I had to put in my car to take to school.
3) Junk Mail. I would keep the good mail and throw the rest in this pile.
4) Two jackets I keep at school that I brought home to wash.
5) A plastic insert for the paint rolling tray for the big roller... off to the garage.
6) Coins to the change hippo in the nursery.
7) A diet Mountain Dew that I had brought home from my class refrigerator to put in my home refrigerator for Meghan.
8) Brady's fetching ball.
9) Ummm... those are totally not my shorts, but I put them in the dirty laundry anyway.

10) water bottles for the recycle bin.
11) Gladiolas, past their prime.....
12) all 4 piles of #12 are papers, school work, kids notebooks, list making notebooks, the good mail, etc. that needed to be sorted through and put away correctly.
13) napkins for the dirty laundry, and a fun party purse for the closet.

The clean up resulted in:
Tons of recycling....

....A clean book shelf
... A chair you could actually sit in

... Oh- and a beautiful door bucket

Thursday 13: (#2 for today) 13 ways we have changed since August

Today, a group of my friends from work all went to lunch at a Mexican restaurant near our work. We realized that the 4 of us had eaten in the same restaurant during August Teacher Work days. Here is a list of 13 things that have changed in our lives since August.

Kate:
1)... is about to be an Aunt for the first time.
2)... boyfriend has been accepted to become an air traffic controller- leaving the job at the bank behind.
3)... found out she has a yeast allergy- but is in total denial about it.

Erika
4)... sister has gotten married and is now pregnant.
5)... brother has been to Iraq and is on his way home
6)... she and her husband both have new Toyotas.

Leah
7)... Dog has been put on Prozac
8)... is dealing with a little miss sassy pants... at only 17 months old.
9)... has become computer literate and is even on Facebook!

Sandy
10)... is about to become an Aunt for the 3rd time- but the 1st time on Mr. D.'s side of the family.
11)... has completed the home study and is actively advertising for a birth mom.
12)... has become a Girl Scout leader.

All of us
13) In August, we were all energized and pumped-- in May, we are all just tired and needing a break!

Thursday 13: Thirteen quirks and quotes from my Granny

Last week, my Granny passed away. She was a very funny lady and she will be deeply missed by me. Here is a list of funny things she would say/do.

1) "I thought it was Audie" This would be the answer when someone would drive over to my Granny's house to make sure she was OK after they called repeatedly and she hadn't answered the phone. My granny didn't have caller ID, but would use her own "psychic" abilities to determine if she would answer the phone or not. She was always convinced that the person calling was some friend of hers (Audie) who she claimed talked for too long- which was funny because my Granny was known for tying up the phone line for hours on end.

2) "those girls" Those girls were which ever group of us that were on her nerves at the time. If she were talking to us it was "you girls" Those girls were usually Me and Kim, or my Mom and Aunt Patsy. Later those girls came to refer to some people who moved down the street with a lifestyle my Granny didn't agree with.

3) "Strang and strowed" This was a term my Granny would use as an excuse as to why her house was a mess. Those girls (Kim and Me) have strang and strowed. While we were known to make a mess when we were little- we were still supposedly stranging and strowning well after we were married.

4) "stepping out and toeing the line" These are phrases that my Granny would use to define the different degrees of someone she was gossiping about who happened to be either cheating or about to cheat on their marriage.

5) "Candle-itis" This was a medical condition my Granny would get from being around to many scented candles in the store. She also got this same disorder from being around too many flowers, such as at a funeral but never refered to it as flower-itis.

6) "The Junk Room" this refers to a room in her house that holds a lot of junk. This is a treasure seekers paradise. Who knows what kind of thing we may find in there. I could always go in there and would find something I needed every time.

7) "Somebody might need it" She was green before it was fashionable. She was always reusing things well passed their prime. She collected plastic forks from fast food establishments when we ate out and would bring them home to wash and reuse. She hated the throw any trash away if it could be reused- and oh how she hated for anyone else to throw things away as well. She was also big into can recycling and would make Kim and I pick up cans from the side of the road any time she spied one and we were in the car.

8) "Someone may need it" part 2 This was the rational for keeping a lot of stuff that no one would ever need. This doesn't just apply to her stuff, but other people's stuff as well. Maybe towards the end of the month when we all work on her house I will do a Thursday 13 with picture of things she kept that I have determined no one actually needed- EVER. We have a BIG job ahead of us!

9) "Here's your coupon" Sometimes, Granny (and Pa when he was alive) would "carry" us to Captain D's as a family. This was one of the nicest restaurants in town at the time. Granny would hand us all our coupon for whatever meal she deemed we wanted. Another funny she would do at the Captain D's is that she would order a fish and fries- (which is 2 pieces of fish, fries and hush puppies) and have my Pa order the two piece fish dinner (which is the same thing plus slaw). Then she would eat his slaw because he didn't eat it, or maybe didn't even like it. We had some fun times at the Captain D's.

10) "Hickie", "Thing" and "Yonder". Hickie referred to a person who Granny couldn't think of their name at the time she was talking about them and would substitute Hickie. Thing was something she would have us looking for, but thing was the only word we had to go on. (I say thing all the time and it drive Mr. D. NUTS! I add a y to the end- thingy). Something the thing was a thing-a-ma-bob, and the person would be a Hickie-ma-bob. Yonder was the place where the thing was usually located. For example- "go get that thing in yonder for me."

11) "MikeSandyKimShane". This was our name growing up. She would sometime call us the wrong names or just all the one big name that was a combo of our names. Just a month or so ago she had me married to my cousin's husband when she was telling my Mother something about me and Mr. D. If you have ever been around a group of kids- I am sure you call them the wrong names sometimes too.

12) "Have you heard back from your Baby" Since we announced that we were trying to adopt, this was the first thing Granny would say anytime she talked to me, saw me or wrote me a letter. She would ask my mom the same thing every time she talked to or saw her. "Has Sandy heard back from her baby".

13) "make yourself a bouquet" For some reason, after people close to us had passed, we would be instructed by Granny to make ourselves a bouquet after the funeral was over and we had come back to visit the grave later that day. With the passing of Granny, we decided to introduce our newest addition Maggie to this tradition. I think Granny would have been proud of our bouquet making skills.

Sandy's my name- painting's my game...

My life has become the movie Groundhog's Day where every day I go to work and come home and paint. The bedroom is looking AWESOME! I only have 1/4th of a wall, the white part of the ceiling, the part of the tray ceiling that needs to be gray and the trim to go. I have decided to try and dye my curtains.... anyone want to bet if there will be a blog entry titled "The great curtain dyeing disaster" ??? I really hope not- but you know how things usually go with me!

my before and after

As you read in the previous post, I have been painting in the bedroom yesterday and continued today. I though this picture was be an accurate portrayal for you guys to see my before and after painting. One the left is our old color, on the right is the new color.
Mr. D. worked more in the bathroom today on the ceiling and the trim. Everything so far in the bedroom I have done myself. He gave me an A minus on my paint job. Not too bad for a girl who does not really enjoy this project.

Saturday revisited

Yesterday, Mr. D. took me for a surprise. He had mentioned it earlier in the week- but I had totally forgotten with all of the moving around I did. He reminded me of it Friday night and said that the neighbors might come too. We got around and all went to a neighboring town for their Market Days. A great idea in theory, but one that has not really taken off yet. It is a little vendor fair that will happen every Saturday until Labor Day. This was the first week of it. I think they had maybe 8 vendors there. I remember seeing booths for bread, soap, herbs, little dresses made out of pillow cases, a restaurant showing how to make their signature dressing, vegetables and pork rinds. I did not see anything that I could not live without. Matt bought some pork rinds, and Caleb stole them.
It was drizzling rain but that didn't stop us for going down to the little playground and playing for a bit. After that we crossed the street and ate at this little snack bar type restaurant. Parker loved his grilled cheese. The boys were thrilled that the place had a bouncy ball machine. While we were there- the power went out. When we got home our power was out too. It really did not matter though since the work I needed to do did not really involve power. I opened the curtain and used the daylight to tape off half of my bedroom. While doing this- our power was restored. Mr. D. worked in the bathroom painting the ceiling and I started the painting in the bedroom. At about 5:30- we panicked because we had to leave for a wedding at 6. I jumped in the shower and tried to get as much of the random paint off of me as possible. I threw an outfit together the best I could and tried to do something with my hair as we raced out the door. We made it to the wedding on time, and enjoyed the ceremony and reception. We left the reception kind of early and came home to clean up the paint mess that we had left behind. Then we watched Slumdog Millionaire and called it a night!

What a week!!!

Once again readers- I am sorry that I have just kind of left you out there wondering how things are going. This has been such a strange week. First off, it was the last week of school- which is funny to say since I work all summer long. But none the less- this was the last week which meant final year end reports were due. What a whole bunch of work that is in itself! One fabulous note is that I was complaining to my Mother about this and she has bought a printer for my classroom!!! This may not revolutionize my life- but it sure will make it a whole lot better. I am thrilled and can hardly wait to get it. My co-teachers are thrilled too!
On a sad note, I lost my Granny this week. She passed away on Tuesday evening. She has been declining for a little while now and had severely declined in the past few weeks. She was 81 years old. I went to see her last week and I am pleased with the way we left things. We really had some fun times together in my life and for better or worse, I am more like my Granny than probably anyone else. Thanks to all of my friends and family for the flowers, emails, calls and support.

The great Do Dah Day disaster of 2009

OK- so maybe it was not quite a disaster- but more of a comedy of errors in a continuous string that made up Do Dah Day. When we woke up- it was raining. Meghan had spent the night and she and I were content in our PJ's on our respective couches to just watch TV and stay home. Mr. D. was having none of this. So, we (reluctantly) rallied and managed to get dressed and at least comb our hair. We loaded up Brady and were off. It was P-O-U-R-I-N-G down rain. The closer we got, the harder it seemed to rain. The ever optimistic Mr. D. kept saying things like "it looks like it is clearing up" and "as soon as this little rain cloud passes the rain will stop".
Much to our disbelief by the time we parked the car, the rain stopped. We parked a couple of blocks away from the event and had to walk over to meet our friends. Brady was so excited that he was drooling. This lady stopped us and informed me that my dog, much to her disgust, was "foaming at the mouth". I told her he was just excited and that he just drools when he is. She just walked off and I was mortified that the lady had suggested that I had basically brought a rabid dog to the dog festival. I did what any good mother would do, I squatted how, wiped his little face (with my shirt sleeve) and told him to stop embarrassing me in public. Fast forward about half a block later- Brady, pops a squat and poops what could possible be the biggest and grossest poop ever. I of course didn't have a bag since they have little bag stations at the festival. So, Meghan and I stood there with the poop while Paul and the guilty party went to find a bag. A few minutes later, one of our friends, Brandt appeared with a bag. Being a gentleman, he even bagged it for us! Then we joined the others to wait for the parade. That is when Brady decided to start scratching as if he were being plagued by fleas. Actually, he didn't like his leash collar - but still it didn't look good to passers by. Then once the parade started Brady was very excited.Ummm -- and let's just say anyone who looked at him was very aware of how excited he was. Just when I was thinking that there couldn't be anything more embarrassing occur in this 2 hour time frame.. I was proved wrong. We walked from the parade to the festival which was in a little park. If you remember - it had rained, no POURED all morning and were there is rain, there is MUD. So, through the mud we all trudged because at the other end were vendors with free stuff. The kids we were with got a really cute future vet kits with a kid sized stethoscope. We got prize bags from various dog related people. Then we saw thePetSmart tent. Mr. D. and Brady headed over there and I waited with Meghan in a more grassy area. This is the moment when I knew we had had enough "fun" at DoDah Day. They had these goodie bags they were giving away but to get one you had to register for a drawing for a free training class. The bag had a frisbee, a stuffed animal, a collapsible water bowl, a ball, and poopie bags and a bag dispenser. A goodie bag well worth filling out a piece of paper for. I walked over to see what was taking so long. When I walked up the guy was asking whichPetSmart we were close to, and I took the time to explain that we were half way between 2 stores, but that we went to a particular one because of one employee and proceeded to tell him how great the employee was (Hannah our fish lady). Mr. D. continues to fill out the form and when I turned to go back to Meghan ---there it was. Mr. muddy paws, up on his hind legs- with his muddy front paws all over their brochures and take home training calenders. He basically destroyed their display. Somehow, I have a feeling we might just win that training class. I am surprised they didn't take our treat bag back. Before things got any worse- we went home. Brady slept most all of the way home.

All in all, It was a fun day with great friends. It was fun and I can't wait to see what is in store of next year's Do Dah Day. Here is a picture of our group. The other two couples had one black and one brown dog each so I told Mr. D. that we need to add a brown dog to our family for next year!

recap

This has been one crazy week. As you can see from my Thursday 13- I have lots on the to-do list. More than usual actually because it is the "end of school"- even thought it isn't the end for me. To give you some insight- It is 7am on Saturday and I am just now getting to start watching the LOST season finale from Wednesday. CRAZY I know!

This week- our elementary school had their Olympics. It was one of the few CMS event that was planned for outside where it didn't rain. We are FAMOUS for planning events that end up rained out. Remember the spring carnival in the tornado just a few weeks ago? Anyway, the weather was great- a little hot- but it was a fun day.

Last night, My co-teachers and our guys were treated to dinner with one of our parents in the class. They own a really neat little pub-type restaurant. We had a great time. The weather was nice and we ate outside in a shaded little court yard type area. The crazy thing was that we were all at a long table so conversations were hard. I don't feel like I really got to talk to the people at the other end of the table. I sat by the mom and she is just delightful. I really felt like it was a great opportunity to get to know the family. Otherwise, we just say a quick hello in the mornings and see each other at school events and conferences. It was nice. I never even really knew what the mom did- and her job is fascinating!! I had a delicious fried green tomato there. I need to go back and have their BLT that has a fried green tomato for the "T". For dinner I had fish and chips. It was so much fun! I had a great time and look forward to Monday when I can talk to Leah and see what the conversations were at the other end of the table.

What on tap for today?? Well, at 8am- I am going next door to keep Parker and Caleb while sweet little Daisy goes to get her puppy shots. Then I am coming back home to wake up the lazy bones for a day of fun. It is Do Dah Day! Hopefully it won't rain!!! More later. Have a fun day!!

Thursday 13: thirteen things I have done since 3pm

It is that time of the year where I am busy busy busy!! Since 3pm today, I have....
1) helped Daisies bridge into Brownies
2) shopped
3) talked to Tiffani, Mr. D, Meghan, Natalie and my Mother.
4) ate dinner with Mr. D.
5) bought ice
6) got the cooler out of the garage.
7) dyed t-shirts ... again (long story that involves a red dye turning more into a pink-ish red-- now I have BLOOD red!)
8) cooked dinner for a sweet family I know with a new sweet baby girl.
9) made Brownies for Mr. D.'s work and the sweet family before mentioned.
10) cleaned the living room.
11) bleached the red dye out of my kitchen sink.
12) loaded dishwasher (I needed like 3 dishwashers tonight!)
13) blogged before bed- as not to disappoint any readers I have left!

Sorry for the lack of blog time. I have so much going on that I am not doing anything well. I was telling this to Mr. D. tonight on the way to dinner. We got out of the car and he laughed and said "you know- you may be right- your shirt is on inside out!" Need I say more??

the text

Mr. D. was off from work today. Around 3 o'clock I got this text pic from him. It was paired with the following words:

HELP!!! I painted Brady!!!

Sunday, May 10, 2009

We have been very busy since my last post. But, in the last two days- something AMAZING happened. We finally chose a paint color for our bedroom and bathroom. We have deliberated with this since- oh, about November- I know this because the gift card we used to buy the paint and supplies said Happy Birthday (to Mr. D.) on it. So I present you with the before and after. Here is the before, with the cheap builders paint- and 4 years (almost 5 years!) of our wear and tear... Oh, and all of our clutter!

After picture- just after the tape came off- before any of the stuff has been put back in.
The color is a Behr paint called Silver Screen. It is a grayish-bluish-purplish color. I wish you could see it better in this picture. I absolutely love it. It really lightened up the room. I can't wait to see it in the bedroom- which with the taupe paint always felt like a cave to me. That of course, will have to wait for another weekend. The bathroom was a challenge in itself- with pitched ceiling lines, but the bedroom has a tray ceiling that will have to be painted! Whew- I am exhausted from it before we even start. Anyway, back to the bathroom. It looks so very pretty with the contrast between the gray and the white trim, ceiling, molding, tub and vanity. Pretty! I just love looking at it! Yeah us!

banned from recycling??

When I got home today- I noticed something was missing. That something was my recycle bin. It is trash and recycling day at my house but the only thing at the street when I got home was the trash can. WHAT? Had I been banned from recycling by the city? Did I put something in there that wasn't on the approved list and I lost my privileged? My neighbor Julie was in the yard. She said that her trash can was gone too. I looked around and saw nothing. We were just watching TV and heard a loud noise. The city had brought them a new trash can. Mr. D. went out to talk to Matt and they noticed a recycle bin about 4 houses down up against a house. Mr. D. walked up to it- and inside was one of my receipts I had recycled. Mr. D. recognized the purchase and brought the bin home! I am so glad- because I always have lots to recycle!

sorry readers

If you have been sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for a picture of the lollipop tree in action- I apologize. Due to the TORNADO sirens going off, hail and rain, the Spring Carnival was canceled at the last minute. I am not sure yet if it will be rescheduled. I can't tell you how sad I am!

P and S... sitting in a tree....

OK- we were not actually sitting in a tree- or K-I-S-S-I-N-G, but yesterday we built a tree.

Our garage became a construction site. We worked very well together and had lots of fun. (NO! Mother, we didn't get in to any disagreements on how things should be done!). We went to Home Depot and purchased the plywood, primer, paint, nuts, washers and bolts. We came home, sawed it in half and went to work. Mr. D. ran the table saw, router and drill. I was in charge of design, paint and the jig saw. At one point I noticed that we were both walking about without shoes, so I named our construction company- The Barefoot Constructors- Safety First. Another funny safety first tidbit is that we only had one pair of protective goggles- so one of us always had to take the risk of eye damage. Luckily- we didn't have an OSHA visit! My class had a $30 budget for this and we were pretty much in that budget range. At one point, we were running out of paint- so instead of buying more paint- I gave the tree a "faux" finish. It actually looks very good! It only took about 6 hours- give or take drying time between paint coats and a few breaks thrown in here and there. Today we have to drill about a hundred holes in the tree. Later today, this tree will become the LOLLIPOP TREE for my school's Spring Carnival. I will take more pictures when it is in full operation. Stay tuned!

Kate's magic purse

OK- Here is a picture of the dress and the purse that matched it. See previous blog if you have NO IDEA what I am talking about. Please note, this is NOT how I wore my hair to the Crawfish Boil. I had it up and cute, but took it down on the way home. I really love you guys to show you this picture of me with such wild crazy hair! Enjoy!

The girl cracks me up!

Tonight I am going to a local concert type of event in my city. I brought my sun dress and shoes to change into at school. Upon seeing the outfit, Kate started digging in her purse that is three time the size of her and pulled out a little clutch purse that perfectly matched my outfit. You will have to wait until tomorrow for pics, but I wanted to take a moment to blog from my BlackBerry about how much Kate just cracks me up! You will be amazed! Until tomorrow...
